Every time I explore a new city, I always start with a list of must-do things that will surely make my vacation a pleasant experience. This time, I decided to try something really unusual in Pune. Without any guides, I spent my whole day according to the advice of local citizens. This turned out to be one of the most interesting and valuable experiences in a new place.
Instead of guiding me through all the well-known tourist attractions of the city, local people talked about their favourite places, popular restaurants which they visited frequently, quiet and beautiful gardens far away from main traffic routes and so on. By the end of the day, I understood that I had seen a side of Pune that most tourists never consider on purpose, but in my opinion, it is more authentic and special.
The day started with a relaxed walk in Pune
What I was advised was neither a monument, nor a museum, nor a heritage site, but an area with a calm ambience in the morning. I was advised to walk aimlessly and take note of how the place comes alive as the day starts.
While wandering around, some small things caught my attention. Locals were riding bicycles and jogging on the trails. Some were visiting their corner bakeries for tea and other snacks. There was something rhythmic about witnessing the city waking up slowly.
Every Pune recommendation felt personal
What became clear was the personalisation in each recommendation. They were not standard tourist advice pieces, but places associated with people’s memories or daily routines.
One person advised me of an independent cosy bookstore they visit during the weekend. Another suggested a small public garden that they loved to visit when they needed some relaxation. Instead of choosing accommodation based only on popular listings, I found that selecting hotels in Pune close to these neighbourhoods made it easier to experience the city through local recommendations and everyday life.
Food became part of my Pune journey
Almost every conversation included a recommendation for something to eat, and I happily followed each one.
Throughout the day, I moved from one small eatery to another, trying dishes that were simple but full of character. These included freshly prepared snacks at roadside stalls, traditional meals served in modest family-run restaurants, and coffee from cafés that had clearly been part of the neighbourhood for years.
Instead of planning meals at fixed times, I ate whenever I came across something interesting or was suggested by someone I met along the way. This made the entire experience feel unstructured in the best possible way.Â
Staying nearby made exploring easier in Pune
My selection of one of the available hotels near highly connected neighbourhoods in Pune was beneficial for exploring. There were no concerns about the long commute and routing through various parts of the city.
Most of the suggested attractions were nearby. This made it convenient to adjust my itinerary based on recommendations from various people.Â
The smaller places left the biggest impression in Pune
Even though I did not go to a few popular places, the more subtle locations stood out. For example, there was a street lined with trees, an independent café that was popular with locals, and a little space in town where people congregated at night simply to sit and socialise.
I understood Pune differently
Towards the end of the day, I realised that heeding the local advice had totally altered my approach to travelling. Rather than following a list and clicking photos, I listened to conversations and observed moments in daily life that showed me the city’s true character.
Final thoughts
Yes, Pune has many popular sights. However, quiet streets, local cafes, parks and just a good environment, which were not included in my itinerary, left a much more pleasant impression than anything else.
My advice would be to leave time for unplanned sightseeing. Find out what places the locals prefer, and not just what is popular among tourists.
